Spellborough got a terrific performance from pitcher Drew Smyly, but it wasn't enough to beat the Philadelphia Black Cats. Philadelphia won the Black Cats Ballpark contest, 8-3. Smyly was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball. Philadelphia now has a 3-game win streak.
The Black Cats got a big at-bat from first baseman Greg Bird. For the game, Bird was 1-3 with a walk. In the bottom of the eighth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 49th hit of the season gave Philadelphia a 4-3 lead.
"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Bird told the Philadelphia Daily News.
